‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ is the feel good show we could all use right now

It’s no doubt that with the current state of the world everyone could use some extra good vibes in their lives. And on top of that we’re all finding ourselves stuck at home with extra time on our hands, time that some are using to binge watch those shows they always said they were going to binge watch or looking for something new to try.

And if that’s you well let me present to you “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” which follows coder Zoey Clarke as she discovers a new power that allows her to hear people’s inner most thoughts and feelings through song after an unusual electrical event. The show has just the right amount of good vibes you’re looking for right now and here’s a few reasons you should watch it.

Killer musical performances

Zoey’s ability allows her to hear people’s heart songs, as she calls them, which leaves the show packed with fantastic musical numbers. Choreographed by Oscar/Emmy winning choreographer and “So You Think You Can Dance” favorite Mandy Moore, the dance numbers are always a joy to watch and the music ranges across every genre and artist you can think of. The best part of the musical performances? They’re not all perfect. Zoey can hear anyone sing and everyone isn’t a dynamic singer, which gives you people who can sing and people who maybe aren’t the world’s greatest singers giving excellent performances all the same.

It takes the concept of what if life was a musical and really puts it in a somewhat realistic view that works so well.

An astounding supporting cast

Jane Levy heads the cast as Zoey (more on her in a moment), but she’s not the only star. Alex Newell, of “Glee” fame, plays Zoey’s non-binary neighbor and true partner in her new power. Mary Steenburgen and Peter Gallagher play Zoey’s parents and boy do they know how to tug at you emotionally. John Clarence Stewart is an absolute stand out as Zoey’s maybe one day love interest Simon and Lauren Graham is fantastic as she always is as Zoey’s boss. And that doesn’t even cover everyone, like the additional characters you meet week to week or Zoey’s other important friends and family members who each have their own flair.

Be prepared though when you come up with an unexpected favorite in Zoey’s seemingly self-centered co-worker Tobin. He’s so damn adorable.

Friendship and family dynamics that hit you right in the heart

Zoey’s world is flipped upside down due to her new ability that seems set on making her life difficult, but it also gives her insight into the people she loves. Her neighbor Moe, who she once couldn’t seem to find common ground with quickly becomes her closest friend. She can communicate with her father, who’s now non-verbal, and hear his voice guiding her once again (and yes, it will make you cry when that happens). It makes things a little awkward with her best friend Max, but provides a bridge for her to work up the courage to talk to her office crush Simon.

Each of her relationships are furthered by her new ability, but also have groundwork that makes each dynamic fun and heartwarming to watch. No bond is left behind and they all have a way of making you smile.

Jane Levy is charming AF

Zoey is a slightly awkward, completely charming and totally real feeling person and Jane Levy plays her to perfection. Whether it’s frustration once she learns more and more about her new ability, chemistry with her two potential love interests or just making you cry in scenes with her dad Levy is a non-stop breath of fresh air.

You can’t help but love her undeniable charm.

“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” airs Sundays on NBC at 9/8C and isn’t on this week due to Easter so there’s time to catch up for free on the NBC app before the next episode.
